Safer Online Standards (S.O.S.) Provide Educators with an Evidence-Based Framework for Digital Safety Education

The Safer Online Standards (S.O.S.) provide educators, schools, and youth advocacy organizations with a practical, evidence-based framework for teaching digital safety and supporting youth mental well-being online. Built on 24 expert-developed standards across five key areas, S.O.S. complements existing digital literacy and wellness curricula while giving educators and families a shared language for discussing online safety.

Unlike fear-based approaches, S.O.S. offers students, parents, and educators transparent ratings that promote informed decision-making and healthy digital habits. These standards evaluate how technology platforms impact youth mental health and respond to suicide-related content, providing schools with credible tools to integrate into health classes, digital citizenship programs, and school policies without politics or panic.

As part of our effort to support educators and youth-serving organizations nationwide, we have developed messaging resources and graphics highlighting how S.O.S. can enhance your digital safety programming. We encourage schools, youth advocacy groups, and educational organizations to share these resources with your communities, colleagues, and families.

Youth mental health and online safety education shouldn't rely on fear or headlines. S.O.S. provides educators with evidence-based standards that promote informed decision-making and healthy digital habits.

Mental health professionals and educators increasingly recognize that restrictive approaches to youth technology use often backfire. S.O.S. takes a different path—empowering students with information rather than imposing limits, supporting critical thinking about platform choices rather than prescribing specific behaviors. These standards evaluate platforms on measurable criteria related to youth mental health, giving educators concrete examples for classroom discussions about healthy digital habits. S.O.S. complements suicide prevention efforts, wellness initiatives, and digital citizenship curricula with tools that respect student autonomy while promoting safety. This framework helps schools navigate the complex intersection of technology, mental health, and education without relying on fear-based messaging. https://www.thementalhealthcoalition.org/sos/

Youth advocacy organizations and schools face a challenge: how do we teach digital safety without contributing to moral panic or disconnecting from how young people actually use technology? S.O.S. offers a solution. These ratings provide students with the same kind of information they use to make other choices—transparent, evidence-based assessments of platform performance on mental health and safety. By treating young people as informed decision-makers rather than subjects of restriction, S.O.S. supports digital citizenship education that resonates with students. For educators, this means practical tools you can integrate into existing programming without overhauling your curriculum. For families, it means conversations grounded in credible information rather than fear.
