“We talk about restoration, and trying to get back to things that are where they were. And that almost may not be possible. But you know, we got to do the best we can to get as close to it as we can.”
A new plan led by the Miccosukee tribe might put an end to decades of prospecting and drilling on nearly 420,000 acres of land in Florida's Big Cypress National Preserve.
This won't stop the drilling completely—but tribe chairman Talbert Cypress says the Miccosukee are in this fight for the long haul.

“To me it makes no sense drilling for oil anywhere in the Everglades. It just doesn’t because the reserves are simply not going to be there to justify that sort of investment.”
WLRN Public Radio and Television takes an in-depth look into the Miccosukee Tribe's decades-old battle with oil companies drilling on their ancestral land in Big Cypress National Reserve—and the deal that might put an end to it for good.
Here's what's at stake if oil drilling continues in Florida's Big Cypress National Preserve:
🔹 720,000 acres of ecologically essential swampland
🔹 Drinking water for over 8M people
🔹 40% of the fresh water in Everglades National Park
🔹 Nine endangered species
