50 years of the Safe Drinking Water Act

Safe Drinking Water Act 50th anniversary social toolkit

The Safe Drinking Water Act is the law that protects the health and safety of the water that comes out of our taps. We’ve made a lot of progress in the last 50 years, protecting our drinking water from over 90 different contaminants, but we still have a ways to go to ensure every person in the United States has access to affordable water that is safe to drink.

Join us in celebrating the Safe Drinking Water Act’s 50th anniversary and the community advocates fighting for stronger public health standards to keep toxic forever chemicals and lead out of taps. Share these voices from across the country, or add your own.

Have you heard of the #SafeDrinkingWaterAct? It’s turning 50 this year and protects the water flowing from our taps. There’s still work to do, but the anniversary is a reminder that we need #SafeAffordableWater for all and we need to honor the lived experience and leadership of communities at most risk. The #SafeDrinkingWaterAct turns 50 this year! This landmark law now protects communities across the United States from over 90+ contaminants making drinking water safer for families. But there’s still more work to be done. The SDWA only regulates public water systems. It doesn’t protect private wells, systems serving less than 25 people, or bottled water. There’s still progress needed decades later to respond to unregulated contaminants and to invest in #WaterInfrastructure to support public health.
