While earnings rose to $37,097, inflation adjusted values actually fell from $31,190 to $28,318. Now, 90% of pre-K-12 ESPs call low pay a serious problem, and 37% must work multiple jobs to survive.

The union advantage is real. ESPs in states with collective bargaining earn 7 percent more than those without. A new contract is boosting starting pay from $24,537 to $39,142, reaching $50,103 by the end of the term.

The 2026 NEA ESP Earnings Report finds that average earnings for ESPs working full‐time in K-12 and higher education in 2024‐25 were $38,494, about $1,400 more than the prior year. But adjusting for inflation, earnings have actually declined 8.9 percent over the past decade
